Crystian Freiberger's love for the sea and surfing served as the primary inspiration for the Wave Armchair. The designer sought to capture the natural beauty, strength, and fluidity of waves in a sculptural piece that not only satisfies the eye but also harmonizes with the human body in its usability.
The Wave Armchair stands out with its unique design, which mirrors the formation of sea waves - more volume at the base and a gradual tapering at the ends. The seat and backrest, suspended without touching each other, are made entirely of fiberglass, adding to the chair's uniqueness. The design captures the fluidity and movement of waves, with the curved base providing a gentle rocking motion.
The creation of the Wave Armchair was a meticulous process. The first prototype was made of plain wood, with layers glued together to form a crude shape. After four months of refining the shape, molds were made from fiberglass using the wooden prototype. The armchair's cover, devoid of zippers or staples, is made of flexible synthetic leather on the inside and woven fabric on the outside, providing a pleasing contrast.
The Wave Armchair is more than just a visually appealing piece of furniture. It offers a unique user experience, with its flexible and adaptive seat providing comfort and a slight swinging motion. Despite its seemingly delicate structure, the chair boasts remarkable durability, with a weight capacity of over 200kg.
The Wave Armchair project, which started in March 2022 in Jaraguá do Sul, was completed in January 2023. It was exhibited in a private event for Quorum Home Design in São Paulo, Brazil, in February 2023. The design's unique properties and innovative approach to furniture design earned it the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2023, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
In conclusion, Crystian Freiberger's Wave Armchair is a testament to the designer's creativity and skill in transforming natural inspiration into a functional and aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture. It serves as a reminder of the limitless possibilities of design when fueled by passion and a deep connection with nature.
